Yay! Let me start by saying HELLO, and welcome to my brand new, very own, Dinkys Cakes blog!! Woo hoo!! I'm a little excited, did you guess?! This has been such a long time coming, but I made it in the end; and I'm soooo pleased you decided to stop by and join me in my cakey world.
So, for those of you who don't know me yet, I'm Diane, aka Dinkys Cakes. Owner, designer, baker, washer upper, the whole works. Ok, so its not just me. I can't forget my very important helpers. That would be Mr Cake and the Kidlings! They like to get a mention haha. And as my BIGGEST supporters and most honest critics, I feel like they kinda deserve one!
I haven't always been a caker. I started out in my working life as an NHS nurse when I was 21, and still a baby! And for 17 years I worked in a busy Newcastle City Centre Intensive Care Unit. The stories I could tell.....but that would be for a whole other blog haha!
Caking for me started 6-7 years ago. My little boy, Zach was turning 2 and I really wanted to make his cake myself. How hard can it be right?! Wrong!!! It really isn't just eggs and flour! I didn't want a simple cake, Noooo! I wanted a full on 3D Thomas the tank engine, with names blocks, the fat controller......you get the point. Yeah, not really that easy after all. But good ol' Debbie Brown to the rescue with her step by step book. So it didn't turn out EXACTLY like the picture, but to be honest, I was well impressed. I searched through my millions of image files and..........I found a picture!! ARGH!! Promise not to laugh...........
And this is pretty much how it began. I had the bug! Starting off making cakes for friends, family, colleagues, the kids schools, their friends birthdays, any excuse to make a cake. Then in 2016 I took the plunge, registered the business and went 'legit'. And what a journey its been ever since.
Mr Cake is forever telling me to increase my online presence. He keeps me right when it comes to the business side of things. He's MEGA organised and efficient, for sure, he's my right hand man!. So, a website was needed! And stupidly, (yes I can totally say that now) I thought I could design it and get it all up and running completely on my own (with a little help from YouTube obviously!). Yeah, that didn't happen! I hold my hands up, I didn't know my SEO from my CMS, my landing page from my exit page. Is it just me, or is this a totally new language?! My head was spinning, I needed help, and lots of it. So, with the help of the amazingly talented Laura over at Purple Scrunch, my fabulous website is now live. And right here at www.dinkyscakes.co.uk EEEEKK! Go and check it out and let me know what you think.
I don't know about you, but my kids are all about the bloggers and vloggers, it's all they ever watch or talk about. So I've decided to get down with the kids and make my own mark on the web. A place to share MY cake journey......
TA DAA..... THIS is that place! Somewhere to talk about all things cake! Sneaky peaks, recipes, tutorials, and of course......the mishaps along the way (yes, I have them!). Hopefully you'll get to know a bit more about me, what motivates and drives me; my passion for all things cake, and maybe try out a few recipes along the way.
So, 2017 is ending on a massive high for me. New website, new blog, winner of 2 awards, collaborating with other cake artists from around the world, and producing some pretty fantastic cakes, if I do say so myself.
But it's not just me. My amazing clients have left some lovely reviews and testimonials too. I love reading them at 2am when I am sooo tired but I REALLY NEED to stay awake to finish that cake!. Its what drives me and motivates me to constantly challenge myself. So, thank you to each and every one of you that took the time to show me some love.
And its ONWARDS and UPWARDS for 2018. I recently quit my nursing job to focus on my business full time and I couldn't be happier. I am excited to see what the new year brings. More collaborations, more stunning wedding cakes, amazing novelty cakes and of course..........Cake International at the end of the year.
So that's it for now. I'm well pleased you stayed until the end haha. Feel free to comment, ask me ANYTHING, or let me know what you'd like to see on the blog. And I really hope you'll stick around and join me on my journey of cakey fun.
Until next time.......Eat cake and be happy!
